Coconut Oil: My Everyday Oil

And I am not even kidding. There is no day without coconut oil. Since I use coconut oil so much, and in many different ways, I thought it would be great to highlight its super-mega awesomeness and share my big love for it!

Forget about your traditional body moisturiser, coconut oil is the best for me for two main reasons. 1. It actually moisturises my body VERY well. 2. Its perfume is enchanting, it smells like holidays every single day all year round. Why would I use mainstream stuff full of nasties again? 😇

I used to be a frenetic lip balm consumer, in winter, in summer, all the time. Until I figure out that since coconut oil is great for my body, then it must be awesome for my lips too. And indeed, it is! Either I use it pure on my lips (believe me, especially during winter when it gets cold and windy, it’ll become your best friend). Or I make something a bit more sophisticated, where I mix up: melted coconut oil + mango butter or  shea butter + a few drops of lavender or ylang-ylang essential oil. Then I store it into my fridge for ~1h so that it gets solid again. I have kept an old lip balm container so now I always make my own one.

My hair is fine and fragile, and the ends get easily dry, especially in summer when I spend too much time in the sun or at the beach. I have not found any better hair mask or conditionner so far. Before my shampoo, I spread about 2 tablespoons of coconut oil all over my hair and focus on the lengths and the ends. I leave it for at least 30 minutes and then I proceed with a normal shampoo. If I want to do a deeper hair mask, I leave it overnight. Results guaranteed, my hair is more shiny and moisturised. Love it!

At the moment, I use Jojoba oil to remove my make-up because my skin loves it. But I’ve tried coconut oil numerous times, and that’s one of my favourite natural alternatives. I won’t never get enough of the delicious smell, and I find it works so well to get rid of mascara. Try it, you’ll be nicely surprised of how good it is to remove entirely your make-up! If you would like more info on how I proceed, I invite you to read my post about my night beauty routine.

Oooookay. This is where I may sound a bit weirdo to some of my friends (well, I guess you knew already anyway?). I do oil pulling every morning when I wake up, before having my breakfast.
What the heck is that? It’s an ancient Ayurvedic technique that consists in swishing coconut oil (I use 1 tablespoon) in the mouth for about 20 minutes. It sounds quite long, but actually while I’m doing it, I prepare my breakfast or have my shower.
What is it for?  Coconut oil is antimicrobial and day after day, it helps improve your (oral but also overall) health, and progressively whitens the teeth.
It’s a super-awesome natural habit I recommend to everyone, and especially to you if you’re a massive coffee/tea drinker or a smoker (bad, bad, bad!).

A bit redundant with oil pulling, buuuut in fact, not really. I use a natural toothpaste (alternating with the Red Seal herbal toothpaste) that I make by mixing up together:
you guess it, coconut oil + activated charcoal (yes, the black thing, true story!) + white clay + a pinch of baking soda + a few drops of tea tree and peppermint essential oils.
Here is a glamourous picture of my black toothpaste that actually whitens the teeth! Black magic, I’m telling you!

I’ve been seing everywhere online and on Instagram this thing called ‘Warpaint’, and I almost had a stroke when I saw the price ($55, #WTF). NO WAY JOSE, it’s a rip-off! Bloody marketing. I got my activated charcoal online, 30g for €2,90 (= $4, nope you’re not dreaming).

I’ve shared on my blog my natural deodorant recipe before. Just have a look at it if you would like to make something a bit sophisticated. But otherwise, if you’re in a rush,  you can use pure coconut oil with 1-2 drops of Palmarosa essential oil under your arms. It makes a so-efficient 100% natural deodorant. The mix of both is antibacterial and neutralises odours. I use this method if I’m running out of my home-made deodorant and haven’t taken the time to make a new batch.

And of course, back to basics, I use coconut oil every day when I cook (or bake).
I still use olive oil, but only when it is not heated (in salads for example). When I want to sauté or fry something, I’d rather use coconut oil because it is very resistant to high heats. I also add 1 tablespoon in my morning smoothie or oats porridge. I do love the taste and it brings a bit of a creamy texture. When it comes to baking, let’s put it this way: it’s a healthy and delicious alternative to butter.

Here are a few more ideas of how to use coconut oil:

Massage oil, shaving gel, home-made body scrub (recipe to come 🔜 ), natural lubricant, after-sun / sunburn remedy, insects repellent… And if you’d like to find out even more tips and in more details, this is an amazing list of all the uses of coconut oil, very thorough, check it out here.

Last but not least, I would say the brand of your coconut oil doesn’t matter, however it’s worth it to precise that to get all the benefits you should always choose it:

✔️  Organic
✔️  Extra virgin
✔️  Cold pressed

Personally, I use these two:

If you did not know much about coconut oil, I hope you’ll give it a try and love it as much as I do! 💛

Enjoy 💋 xx
